Let’s Watch Some Celebrity Wedding Videos!

When it comes to celebrities, they are just like everyone else.  They like to eat cake, party with their friends on the dance floor and most importantly, chronicle their big day with an epic wedding film.  We wanted to review a few celebrity wedding videos and see how they stack up against our style.

Justin & Hailey Bieber’s Wedding

The first thing that stands out about this video: very few of our grooms want to appear in their wedding film wearing only their Calvin Klein briefs and dress socks.  We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this look for most grooms in their wedding films, but if you can get that sweet endorsement money to help pay for your wedding, go for it!  In all seriousness though, this is a lovely document of their day.

We love the interviews with Justin and Hailey as they’re getting ready.  Also, the interview segments with their friends and family provide a nice background to the couple’s story and what it took to get to them to their nuptials.  If we had to describe this wedding video in one word it would be “raw.”  Did you notice how the video quality shifts in between different camera shots throughout the film?  For instance, during the reception portion of the video, the filmmakers use a mix of professional cameras picking up the action, an old camcorder for interviews with guests like Usher, a traditional 16mm film camera for some intimate shots and well-lit studio setups for background interviews with Justin and Hailey.  The filmmakers used all of these different cameras, filming styles and interviews to tell the unique story of the couple, without regard for how well the differing looks meshed together.  It creates an interesting tapestry that feels real and personal.

If we had one complaint though about this video, it’s the audio.  For instance, during the ceremony, the filmmakers should have at least had a lavalier microphone on the officiant, so we could hear the vows better.  It’s a minor quibble, but in our experience filming weddings, having clear audio from their ceremony and the toasts is one of their biggest wants for our couples when it comes to their wedding video.

Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich’s Wedding

One of our favorite wedding videography companies, White in Revery, put together this moving film.  It’s short, sweet and beautifully chronicles the wedding weekend of the Dancing with the Stars judge and the NHL hockey player.

In order to pull this video off, the filmmakers and the couple definitely needed to do some extra planning and scheduling.  Not only did they need to build in extra time during their big day to get those amazing shots on the boat, but it also looks like they setup a session a day or two before to get some extra photos and footage of the couple playing in the wheat fields, the toasts from the rehearsal dinner and a midday party in the marina.

More than likely White in Revery had at least three videographers there to capture everything.  For instance, during the ceremony it looks like they had one videographer piloting a drone, one positioned in the aisle and another stationed off to the side to get closeups of the couple.

What we love most about this film is how it makes the viewer feel while watching it.  The couple looks so happy.  The reception looks like a blast.  The Colorado scenery looks magical.  We want an invite to a wedding weekend like this!

Pusha T and Virginia William’s Wedding

This wedding between the rapper and his girlfriend of 11 years took place in her hometown of Norfolk, Virginia.  In another short and sweet film, the videographers use the words of the officiant and the toast givers to frame the couple’s big day.  The footage is gorgeous and their story of their love story is told with some great editing.

The intimate ceremony features a nontraditional setup, with the guests’ chairs lined up facing each other as the couple says “I Do” in the middle of the long narrow hall.  As a videographer or photographer, this kind of unorthodox setup takes extra planning and coordination.  With less room to move around, the professionals who have been hired to document the wedding need to work together closely in order to make sure everyone gets the footage and photos the couple wants.  If the photographer and videographer don’t coordinate as a team, both of their work tends to suffer.  That doesn’t seem to be the case with this wedding film though.  Despite the less than perfect setup for the ceremony, the wedding filmmakers from 8 Media Group captured the important parts of the ceremony with creativity.

Our only nitpick with this film has to do with the audio.  Just like the Biebers’ wedding video, this film would have benefited from the officiant wearing a small lavalier microphone for better sound.  Also, we like to place the microphone on a mic stand during the toasts.  We do this for three reasons.  Not only does the mic stand allow us to rig up a small backup microphone that sometimes sounds better than what comes out of the DJ’s mixer, but it keeps the toast giver from moving around too much.  If a nervous dad gets too close to one of the DJ’s speakers, the audience sometimes gets pounded with ear-bleeding feedback.  No one wants that kind of surprise at a reception.  Also, by keeping everyone who gives a toast in the same place without moving around too much, we’re able to light them better.

Despite our quibbles over the audio, this is a beautiful video by a talented group of wedding filmmakers.  It definitely fits right in with other celebrity wedding videos.
